Church garden group

On most Friday mornings – except when it is too cold or wet – if you look very closely around the church garden you are likely to find the garden volunteers. We meet from 9.00am to about mid-day catching up with seasonal jobs as in any garden – pruning shrubs and fruit trees; weeding; thinking up new projects and sometimes just looking and enjoying the plants that we care for. Then we say it’s time for coffee and a chat.

The garden has had a varied history from spoil heap to allotment to orchard for historic variety fruit trees to its current life as a mixed ornamental and fruit garden. The fruit – apples, plums, damsons, quince – are used by Wesley’s kitchen, or made into jams and chutneys and sold to finance the garden. Cherries and sloes are usually left for the birds. Our aim is to develop the garden into a place of interest and inspiration all through the year and for all who walk through it. A work in progress.
